Study: Florida’s Black College Students Need More Support

Barriers like financial constraints, family obligations and involvement with the justice system are preventing some Black Floridians from achieving the same postsecondary access and participation as their peers.

survey from the nonprofit Helios Education Foundation found Black students in Florida earn two-year college degrees at rates 10% to 15% lower than other racial groups.

Paul Perrault, senior vice president of community impact and learning for the Helios Education Foundation, said Black students reported nonacademic barriers more often than other historically marginalized groups.

"Black students tended more often to talk about that they needed to help provide financial support for their families, or actually financially support themselves at a higher rate," Perrault observed. "Having to balance college and work, they had more circumstances or kind of life experiences that were going around that they had to navigate."

Helios advocated for a five-year plan to address finances and other barriers, through what it calls "holistic partnerships" between K-12 schools, state colleges, social service agencies and other groups to improve higher-ed opportunities for Black Floridians.

Courtney Brown, vice president of impact and planning for the Lumina Foundation, said cost is the primary reason more than half of all unenrolled adults said they have not completed college, but Black students have more interest in postsecondary education than other groups.

Brown noted Lumina's 2022 State of Higher Education Report showed minority students across the country would benefit from increased support to help them juggle multiple responsibilities and stay in school.

"Black students and multiracial students were the highest percentage of those considering re-enrolling or enrolling," Brown explained. "And that's over whites and Asians. Of course, these are the same individuals in the survey struggling to stay in; stress and cost are prohibitive factors for them."

The latest Lumina Foundation/Gallup survey said 51% of Black and multiracial U.S. adults without a degree have considered enrolling in a post-high school certificate or degree program in the past few years, a rate higher than Asian, Hispanic, Native American or white adults.

Support for this reporting was provided by Lumina Foundation.

DeSantis Wages War Against Anti-Racism, Corporate 'Wokeness'

 Florida News Connection

Gov. Ron DeSantis has been confronting a lot of issues dealing with race and inclusion. The latest is his signing into law his version of Florida's new Congressional district maps which heavily benefits Republicans and slashes the number of Black districts in half, from four to two.

DeSantis claims the districts were racially gerrymandered, but his proposed "race-neutral" map caused a sit-in protest by mostly Black lawmakers in the Florida House at the end of the redistricting special session.

Rep. Angie Nixon, D-Jacksonville, expressed her frustration.

"Ron DeSantis is disrespectful, Ron DeSantis is a bully, Ron DeSantis does not care about Black people," Nixon asserted. "I will not bite my tongue. There is an incessant attack on Black people in the state of Florida."

The League of Women Voters of Florida and a number of Democratic-aligned redistricting groups filed suit the same day the governor signed his maps into law. The League successfully challenged the state during the last redistricting process, and its president now vows to fight for "the votes and voices of hundreds of thousands of Black voters."

The DeSantis administration also stirred controversy when it announced a ban of 54 of 132 math textbooks it said included references to "critical race theory" and other "prohibited" topics, but offered no details.

Bacardi Jackson, interim legal director for the children's rights project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, said she thinks ongoing pushback from the Black Lives Matter movement sparked conversations about the impact of systemic and structural racism.

"We seem to be in an era and a moment that said, 'White supremacy now, White supremacy always. We will resist every effort to make our society diverse,' " Jackson contended.

Jackson filed a public-records request for the administration to reveal its criteria for rejecting books. The Department of Education only lists four examples on its website and is unclear about specific concerns.

DeSantis has long pledged to take a stand against what he calls "state-sanctioned racism" and on Friday he signed into law what he calls the "Stop WOKE Act," which restricts how race is discussed in schools, colleges and workplaces.

DeSantis also signed a bill just days after it was introduced revoking the Walt Disney Company's special district status in the state.

Daniel Uhlfelder, a former Republican turned Democratic activist and candidate for Attorney General, called the move reckless.

"That seems to be a pattern with the leadership we have where they make these very quick, rash, impulsive decisions when someone or something does something that they don't agree with," Uhlfelder remarked. "That is a dangerous precedent. "

Tax experts and legislators said eliminating the district could have unintended consequences for county taxpayers, underscoring Uhlfelder's point the decision needed the careful analysis of experts, not a surprise issue for lawmakers in special session to address congressional redistricting.

Disney Jumped Out of Its Lane and Ran Headlong into a Political Train Wreck

FLORIDA

Opinion by:
E. Eugene Webb PhD
Author:
In Search of Robin

There's no doubt that the Disney company completely mishandled the Florida independent special districts bill also known as “The don't say gay bill."

First no comment, then, supposedly forced into the issue by their LGBTQ employees, Disney bungled it once again, and finally coming out against the Bill.

If you want some information regarding independent special districts and the Reedy Creek district which Disney controls, you can check out these links.

SB 4-C: Independent Special Districts

From CNN By Eric Levenson and Dianne Gallagher: Why Disney has its own government in Florida and what happens if that goes away.

The Reedy Creek district consists of about 25,000 acres in Orange and Osceola counties in Florida. It includes four theme parks, two water parks, one Sports Complex, 175 miles of roadway, 67 miles of waterway and the cities of Bay Lake, and Lake Bell Vista.

You can check out the Reedy Creek website by clicking here.

I'm not sure about what kind of roller coaster ride the Disney people thought they were embarking on with their approach to the governor's proposed bill and the not too surprising results in the legislature.

One thing is for certain; this whole debacle has turned into a major train wreck for the Disney people.

Like most people and organizations that have decided to take on Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, DeSantis is not easily scared and Disney's sheer size and presence in Florida certainly didn't intimidate the governor.

What is turning out to be a public relations nightmare for Disney, is in many ways a political campaign plus for the governor and his reelection effort.

And if you think for one moment that this isn't a political battle, note the political comments coming out of the two counties that are part of the Reedy Creek district, Orange County and Osceola County.

These local politicians are crying the sky is falling, and property taxes will escalate while failing to recognize or report the massive amount of property tax revenue that will come into these counties as the special taxing district is dissolved.

Why would they do that?

The answer is simple.

The local-area politicians in these two counties don't want to get on Disney's bad side and risk losing Disney's political campaign support in upcoming elections.

Going forward, Disney's dollars are only going to go to people who support Disney's position of retaining the Reedy Creek taxing district.

I wonder which gubernatorial candidate will put on the mouse ears and pick up Disney’s cause?

DeSantis Would Cut Florida's Black Representation in Half

 Florida News Connection

 By: Trimmel Gomes

Florida's redistricting saga continues Tuesday when lawmakers return to Tallahassee for a special session to essentially give Gov. Ron DeSantis what he wants.

Legislators passed their own version of Florida's proposed new congressional maps, but the governor vetoed them in favor of his own, which favor more Republicans and dismantle districts ensuring representation for Black voters.

Ellen Freidin, CEO and general counsel of Fair Districts Now, led the campaign in 2010 to pass a constitutional amendment to prevent politicians from doing exactly what the governor is doing.

"He's really totally disregarding all the voters of Florida and in particular Black voters in the two districts," Freidin asserted. "He's cutting black representation in Florida in half."

Claiming racial gerrymandering was part of the process, DeSantis wants to split the 5th Congressional District, represented by Rep. Al Lawson, D-Fla., who is Black, and the 10th Congressional District represented by Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., a Black Democrat now running for U.S. Senate.

Even though the state Constitution puts lawmakers in charge of redistricting, the GOP-controlled Legislature agreed to back away from challenging DeSantis, despite calls from Democrats to do so.

Freidin thinks the governor's goal is to get rid of the Fair Districts Amendment, which prevents politicians from drawing districts for their own advantage and ensure fair, minority representation.

"It's totally unprecedented for a governor to bulldoze his way into redistricting," Freidin contended. "And again, he's doing it for his own political ambitions."

Legal challenges are expected. The once-a-decade process of redrawing maps will affect Floridians' ability to have their voices represented in Congress, at least until the next redistricting process.

Cannot Trust Those Closely Intertwined With All for Transportation Especially As AFT 2.0 $18 BILLION Rail Tax Do-Over Is Put on the Nov. Ballot

 Tampa, Fl

From: Eye On Tampa Bay
Posted by: Sharon Calvert

The local rail cartel includes elected officials, unelected bureaucrats, transit activists, some local media allies, lawyers and wealthy special interests who keep funding rail tax boondoggle referendums.

These people are closely intertwined with the pro rail All for Transportation (AFT) Political Action Committee (PAC) funded by the wealthy special interests. Their collusive behavior and cozy relationships breeds distrust.

They work together, whether ethical or not, and have stacked transportation decision making positions in Hillsborough County with themselves. The result is they reside within their own group think bubble they rarely venture out of.

The taxpayer funded agency Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) embedded an All for Transportation (AFT) Political Action Committee video on their taxpayer funded website. Below is a screenshot captured of the video displaying AFT Co-founder Rena Frazier.

This is unethical, especially when the TPO would be handed a boatload of new millions from the AFT rail tax. But is it legal and A-OK for a taxpayer funded agency to embed content from a biased Political Action Committee on their website?

The TPO removed the video only after they got caught.

'Embattled' FL Abortion-Rights Advocates are Hopeful

 Florida News Connection

By: Trimmel Gomes

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a 15-week abortion ban into law, a major blow to overall abortion access in Southern states where Florida has been a beacon.

The governor's action comes just days after a Florida judge tossed out a challenge to another law calling for a 24-hour waiting period for an abortion after consulting with a doctor.

Amy Weintraub, reproductive rights program director for Progress Florida, said although the governor's signature was expected, it was a shock to the system for those entrenched in the reproductive-rights movement.

"We are feeling especially -- what's the word -- 'embattled' currently," Weintraub remarked. "And of course, we are also bracing ourselves with what the United States Supreme Court is going to decide."

DeSantis said the law will defend those who cannot defend themselves.

Republicans across the nation have added new abortion restrictions since the U.S. Supreme Court signaled it would uphold Mississippi's law banning abortions after 15 weeks. The court could weaken or overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision guaranteeing a pregnant person's right to choose an abortion.

Weintraub noted she is heartened by the number of companies including, Apple, Citi and Yelp stepping up to show abortion care is a workplace issue. They are providing travel support to people who are stuck in states with restrictions beyond Florida's 15-week ban, like Texas.

"Many of the problems that pregnant people experience with their pregnancies cannot be anticipated before this restriction is looming over their heads," Weintraub explained. "These employers recognize that, and they are promising their employees that they will be able to get the health care they need, and I think that's freaking fantastic."

Florida's new law, which goes into effect July 1, does not allow for exemptions for pregnancies from rape, incest or human trafficking. It does exempt if the abortion is necessary to save a mother's life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality.

Should Biden Be More Worried About World War Three or The Atrocities Being Perpetrated In the Ukraine?

FLORIDA

Opinion by:  E. Eugene Webb PhD
Author: In Search of Robin

There seems to be a lot of hand wringing both politically and militarily in Washington and the Pentagon regarding what might happen, versus what is happening in the Ukrainian war.

President Biden has consistently said we will not provide direct military support to the Ukrainians, nor will we recommend a no-fly zone over the Ukraine which would more than likely involve US combat pilots engaging with Russian combat pilots to control the Ukrainian airspace.

Biden fears a third World War, and his fears are being stoked by the military elite at the Pentagon saying any involvement could lead to World War III.

Here's the fact, World War III hasn't started yet and the atrocities in the Ukraine keep growing every day. To me, the real question here is: how can the United States of America, a faith-based political system, for the most part, stand idly by while hundreds if not thousands of Ukrainian men, women and children are slaughtered by the Russian invasion?

It is certainly reminiscent of the view’s countries took just prior to the Second World War.  And look what happened there. Once the Nazis gained a foothold, they weren't satisfied with the territory they'd gained they just kept on coming.

That is certainly more than likely what will happen if Russia is successful and totally captures the Ukraine. It may be one year, two years or five years from now, but the real certainty is the longer it goes the stronger the Russian military influence in that part of the world will be and the more likely this war will be on the doorsteps of all of Europe and perhaps the continental United States.

It's just simply time to quit wringing our hands about what Russia might do and simply deal with the fact of what they are doing.

They are indiscriminately killing innocent people. Almost every country in the world either has or is teetering on calling what's going on in the Ukraine war crimes.

It is inhumane, and the most-recent assignment of General Alexander Dvornikov is a clear indication that the Russians have every inclination to keep killing innocent civilians.

So, President Biden, it's time to put on your big boy pants think of Harry Truman, for example, maybe a little of that moxie could enter itself into your spirit and your soul.

I'm not sure how well you sleep at night knowing that the United States with all of its military power, technological savvy, global capability and satellite capacity can stand idly by regardless of those little pieces of paper that people signed about non-aggression and overstepping and all that stuff and watch hundreds if not thousands of people die unnecessarily.

All I know is I don't sleep well these nights knowing that's how the view of the leaders of my country is playing out.
