In The Face of Tragedy

 FLORIDA

Opinion by: E. Eugene Webb PhD

This past week put us face to face once again with one of the darkest parts of our society.

Our reactions are often predictably inadequate.

Loss

I'm so sorry for your loss. The Oxford dictionary defines loss as, the fact or process of losing something or someone, the state or feeling of grief when deprived of someone or something of value. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines loss in many ways one of which is: the harm or privation resulting from losing or being separated from someone or something.

The question is, when you look at someone who has suffered a terrible loss, and you say, “I'm so sorry for your loss, are you really?”

Prayers

Another often positive reaction to a loss such as what we have seen this past week is simply the expression, “I'll be praying for you, or I'll keep you in my prayers, or we should all keep them in our prayers.”

And the question is: do we really keep the people who suffer these types of tragedies in our prayers?

Have you, in the past days since the tragedy in Texas, stopped for an instant, closed your eyes, or dropped your head, and remembered those who lost children in the Texas’ shooting?

We roll these comments off our tongues, “I'm so sorry for your loss, and I'll keep you in my prayers," almost literally without thinking about what we're saying.

More appropriately, do you know how to offer such a prayer?

Even those with a strong biblically based faith are often at a loss when it comes to praying in the face of tragedies.

Dealing with grief and loss is difficult for all of us. It's even more difficult when it is a close loved one. When the loss is a distant tragedy, one that doesn't directly affect us in a real way, in many cases, we are just simply looking for the right words.

As the number of these tragedies continues to grow, these platitudes of concern seem to mean less and less.

BayPost Media hosts several different sites. One of them is a daily prayer guide. You can check it out at His Moments or on Twitter. I hope you find it helpful.

If you are genuinely sorry about what happened in Texas, and you're experiencing a deep sense of grief for those who were directly involved, then you may want to pray not only for them, but for yourself and your children.

Ms. Magazine Relaunches 1972 'We Have Had Abortions' Petition

The leaked draft opinion signaling the Supreme Court's majority decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has sent shock waves across the U.S. When a final decision is issued before the end of the Supreme Court's term (likely in June), it will represent the biggest blow to women's constitutional rights in history.

In 1972, when abortion was still illegal throughout most of the country, 53 well-known U.S. women courageously declared "We Have Had Abortions" in the pages of the preview issue of Ms. magazine.

The Washington Post credited the petition with the "start of a powerful strategy in the U.S. abortion rights movement: ending the secrecy that had kept many women out of the fight." Executive editor Kathy Spillar told the Washington Post in a recent interview, "It made it acceptable to speak about it."

The next year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that abortion was a fundamental right protected by the U.S. Constitution. This year, the Supreme Court appears poised to reverse this position. In this perilous time, Ms. is relaunching the petition-with the encouragement and support of some of the original 1972 signers. This year alone, the petition has garnered almost 7,000 signatories.

Below is an excerpt from recent Washington Post coverage of the 1972 petition, as well as the 2022 relaunch. It shows the power of activism and journalism, and how they can shape a movement.

'We have had abortions': 1972 petition changed abortion rights movement

The first Ms. petition marked the start of a powerful strategy in the U.S. abortion rights movement: ending the secrecy that had kept many women out of the fight.

The effort has been replicated in recent years for the digital age, including the #ShoutYour Abortion Twitter challenge. Congresswomen have shared their own abortion stories on the House floor.

But that first Ms. petition circulated when abortion was illegal in most of the country.

Included in the Ms. issue were coupons for readers to fill out and mail in to add their names to the petition. Hundreds of the coupons poured in. Later that year, in its September issue, Ms. ran the petition again, this time with about 1,425 signatures.

"It liberated and mobilized an army of women who had been keeping a secret," said [Suzanne Braun Levine], who joined Ms. as editor soon after the petition ran.

Leaders of Tampa Bay Transportation Organizations Request Gov DeSantis Veto TBARTA Funding

Tampa, Fl

From: Eye On Tampa Bay
Posted by: Sharon Calvert

Today leaders of No Tax For Tracks, Save Our Streets Pinellas, and Fix Our Roads First sent a request to Governor DeSantis urging the Governor to veto the $1.375 million funding for TBARTA in the budget.

Below is a copy of the veto request:

TBARTA funding Veto request

TBARTA is a duplicative transit agency in Tampa Bay who has no long term funding source because they are not needed. Even TBARTA's own board members think little of this agency because they do not regularly show up at TBARTA's me

Tampa Bay does not need another layer of taxpayer funded transit agency in an area where transit ridership is less than 2 percent.

TBARTA was created by the State legislature 15 years ago at the behest of special interests lobbyist Tampa Bay Partnership, who funds every rail tax boondoggle in Tampa Bay. They never received any long term funding because the intent was to then make TBARTA a regional taxing authority to push costly regional rail throughout the Tampa Bay area....which thankfully never happened.

Unfortunately, taxpayers have been forced to pay for TBARTA's "well connected" lobbyist to go begging for state funding every year. Fifteen years later, TBARTA has nothing to show except enriching consultants, enriching the lobbyist and now paying their Executive Director $300K.

TBARTA is a poster child of government creating a new bureaucracy for special interests that has little to no accomplishments. The unnecessary bureaucracy becomes a drag on taxpayers and then we cannot get rid of it.

But this agency can be defunded at the State level. Contact the Governor at GovernorRon.Desantis@eog.myflorida.com to ask him to veto and stop this wasteful spending.

We urge Governor DeSantis to veto the $1.375 Million TBARTA funding in the budget.

Law Boosts FL Mental Health Focus For Students And Families

 Florida News Connection

By: Chance Dorland

Starting in July, Florida students and families will receive more information on the mental health services they are entitled to.

Rep. Christine Hunschofsky, D-Parkland, served as the mayor of Parkland during the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, where 17 students were killed. She said her time as mayor influenced her decision to sponsor House Bill 899.

"If a student is receiving behavioral health services in the school, the school is then required to let their family and/or caregivers know about the services that are available to the family and caregivers, both at the school and in the community," Hunschofsky outlined.

The measure was signed into law last week. Florida and the rest of the nation continue to observe National Mental Health Month during May, as they have for seventy years.

This year, the observation comes as schools and families grapple with the COVID lockdowns and the threat of mass shootings. Hunschofsky argued more needs to be done to provide mental health services to all Floridians, as well as a change of attitude toward mental health.

"We've seen the toll the pandemic and just life has taken on the mental health of so many," Hunschofsky noted. "It's always interesting to me that people separate mental health from physical health. And they're incredibly interconnected."

Dr. Rhonda Randall, chief medical officer of UnitedHealthcare employer and individual, said southern states often have much less access to mental health services.

"In New England, those states have a tendency to have very high numbers of licensed mental health care professionals per capita, and in the Southeast, we see lower," Randall pointed out. "In fact, in some states, that can be a sevenfold difference."

Last year, the Florida legislature created a Commission on Mental Health and Substance Abuse to examine how the Sunshine State provides mental health and substance abuse services. It expects to make recommendations to lawmakers.

Looking Down - The Small Screen Dilemma

 FLORIDA

Opinion by:

E. Eugene Webb PhD

If you glance around today you will probably notice most people are looking down.

It doesn't matter if they're sitting in a waiting room, riding in the car, riding on the bus, sitting at Starbucks, sitting on a park bench or sitting in their office. Even when they're walking they're looking down.

Most of us spend the vast majority of our time looking down.

It used to be we spent most of our time looking up. We were glancing around looking at our surroundings looking at the people walking by. Today, we spend almost all of our looking time looking down looking at the cell phone, the iPad, and in very rare occasion’s we may actually be reading a book.

The problem with looking down, is simply you don't see what's going on around you.

We are becoming the generation that gets all of their information from a small screen provided by a small group of people and almost always totally and completely biased.

I'm guilty. And as much as I hate to admit it I don't spend nearly enough time on my backyard patio watching the birds, going to an art gallery and looking at the paintings or walking through a mall and enjoying the people and the window displays.

We are a generation of screen mongers. And as our screens have become more delicious with multiple and vibrant colors, exciting graphics, high resolution videos our attention is universally drawn to the small screen.

The small screen invites us into a small world.

It’s a world manipulated by those who control social media. And, maybe to some degree by the people who provide social media content. People like me, bloggers, Facebook posters, Twitter users, those on Tic/Tock and many others.

I think the real issue with looking down is we lose our perspective.

Things like a horrific war in the Ukraine are reduced to the small screen and they don't seem like such a big deal sometimes. Inflation, a really big deal, again reduced to the small screen with some charts from the stock market, some bar graphs going up or down depending on what point the writer is trying to make but still reduced to a small screen where visually very interesting but I think in many cases their impact is minimized.

I walked into the breakfast area of a road motel this week, and there was a woman sitting at a table with a bowl of cereal, a cup of coffee and her cell phone laying beside the bowl. She was looking intently at the cell phone, didn't notice me as I walked by and rarely looked at her cereal as she took bite after bite.

It's surprising how easy it is to get immersed in the small world of looking down.

FL Officials Open Virtual Public Hearing on New Aquatic Preserve

Florida News Connection

This afternoon, members of the public will get to have a say on the management plan for the first new aquatic preserve created in Florida in 32 years.

In 2020, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation to create the Nature Coast Aquatic Preserve, which will protect some 400,000 acres of seagrass spanning more than 700 square miles along Citrus, Hernando, and Pasco counties.

Keith Kolasa, aquatic services and waterways manager with the Hernando County Department of Public Works, said the goal is to be proactive in protecting many sensitive ecosystems.

"Protect and preserve a resource that's in good shape," said Kolasa, "versus trying to restore it similar to what we've seen in Tampa Bay and to the south, where there have been a lot of red tide and algae blooms."

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection will host two remaining public hearings, a virtual one at 6 p.m. today to present the draft Nature Coast Aquatic Preserve Management Plan to the public for their review and feedback, and an in-person meeting next Tuesday in Crystal River.

Details are on floridadep.gov.

The Nature Coast Aquatic Preserve is the second-largest aquatic preserve in Florida. Justin Grubich, science and policy officer with The Pew Charitable Trusts, said the management plan ensures that the way of life can thrive in the area that is heavily dependent on seagrass.

"Not only the biological inhabitants, all the sea turtles and manatees and fish and scallops that we like to catch and view," said Grubich, "but it also helps those coastal communities that depend on those resources for their livelihood."

Grubich said the management plan is a crucial component because it sets the road map for nearly everything that will happen at the preserve, from education to habitat monitoring.

It also identifies the priorities of maintaining those ecosystems and balancing them with public use.

Grubich said another critical component is gathering data management for research and learning about species beyond the areas currently known.

The Florida Governor's Race What Does Charlie Crist Need to Do?

FLORIDA

Opinion by:
E. Eugene Webb PhD

The Florida Governor's race is still a while off, but the election is starting to take shape.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis continues to hold a lead over all of those running in the Democratic party primary, including Nikki Fried and state Senator Annette Taddeo.

You can check out the latest polling for the Florida governor's race at RealClear Politics.

Charlie Crist is polling well statewide, and his fundraising efforts are significantly passing his nearest Democratic competitors, but Crist’s total fund-raising pales in comparison to that of current Governor Ron DeSantis.

It's not exactly a sure thing that Charlie Crist has a lock on the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, but everything seems to be trending that way.

This is going to be a tough race for Representative Crist. Charlie has always been a good retail campaigner, leaning heavily on his general persona of nice guy and caring and compassionate leader.

It's been a long time since Charlie was in a campaign with a serious rough and tumble competitor like Ron DeSantis. The decision that the Crist campaign must make is whether or when Charlie decides to come out swinging.

And then, there is the question of what role Donald Trump will play in the Florida Gubernatorial race?

No matter who wins the Democratic nomination for Governor here in Florida, once that decision is made you can expect DeSantis to come to come out with a vicious Trump like campaign. The question is. How will Charlie respond?

Will Charlie take the gloves off, or try to “nice guy” his way through the DeSantis blitz?

It is going to be a lot like the nice kid on the school playground facing down the playground bully.

Florida could use a break from high-octane politics and bullying leadership.

I like Charlie Crist. I like him as a person, politician, and leader. He was a good governor before, and I think he would make a good governor for Florida now.

In a country and a State like Florida where almost everything is polarized politically right or politically left it will be difficult for a slightly left-leaning candidate like Christ to fight the headwinds.
