Good Tuesday morning.

House Speaker Danny Perez has appointed three new members to the Florida Alliance to End Human Trafficking’s Board of Directors, the organization announced.

Ignacio M. Alvarez, Yesenia Sanchez and Stephen K. Talpins bring backgrounds in law enforcement, prosecution, healthcare, business and community engagement to the nonprofit’s Governing Board.

“Ending human trafficking requires strong partnerships and leaders who bring different perspectives, experiences and a shared commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals,” said Erin Collins, the alliance’s executive director. “Ignacio, Stephen and Yesenia each bring valuable expertise and a demonstrated commitment to public service and community engagement. Their leadership will help us expand our reach, strengthen partnerships and advance our efforts to prevent trafficking across Florida.”

Ignacio M. Alvarez, Yesenia Sanchez and Stephen K. Talpins bring fresh expertise to Florida’s fight against human trafficking.

Alvarez is the founder and managing partner of the ALGO Law Firm, where his practice includes civil and criminal litigation, political advocacy and internal corporate investigations. He retired as a major after 25 years with the Miami-Dade Police Department and has worked with the U.S. Department of State to train law enforcement officers in Central America.

Sanchez is Cigna’s market president for South Florida and the Caribbean. She joined the company in 2005 and has held leadership positions in sales and public-sector markets. Sanchez also has a background in public health and higher education, including service as an adjunct professor at Florida International University.

Talpins serves as chief assistant state attorney for Miami-Dade County and is a member of the State Attorney’s Office leadership team. He has overseen divisions and initiatives involving human trafficking, organized crime, cybercrime, domestic violence and community outreach. Talpins was also selected as a National Institute of Justice Law Enforcement Advancing Data and Science scholar in 2021.

Former Rep. Jackie Toledo, now running for Hillsborough County Commission, faces a lawsuit over more than $17,000 in unpaid debt related to her engineering business.

Toledo is named in a lawsuit filed by Preferred Materials, Inc., a company that provides asphalt, concrete, concrete products, and paving services throughout the Southeast U.S.

Jackie Toledo faces an unwelcome campaign-season complication: a lawsuit over an unpaid business debt.

The lawsuit alleges Toledo’s business, Florida Engineering and Consulting LLC, purchased building materials on credit from Preferred Materials totaling $17,156 but never repaid the balance. The lawsuit said payment was sought but not received.

Toledo is named in the lawsuit as an individual, not just her business, because she personally signed a guaranty of her business account.

Toledo has not been accused of fraud or misappropriating funds; rather, the lawsuit seeks the unpaid balance of supplies purchased through credit from Preferred Materials. Asked about the lawsuit, Toledo pointed out that “the allegations in a civil complaint are not judicial findings.” She said the issue “arises from a commercial construction arrangement involving third-party contractors and materials supplied to their projects.”

Toledo said she hadn’t seen the complaint so she could “respond to the actual pleadings rather than assumptions.” She did not provide further comment before the deadline.

Toledo, a Republican, is running for the District 1 seat on the Hillsborough County Commission currently held by Democrat Harry Cohen, who is seeking re-election.

“Byron Donalds promises affordability as Governor” via Stephanie Tharpe of Forbes — Florida’s affordability crisis is testing the promise of its economic success. Republican gubernatorial nominee Donalds says the next Governor must make the Florida dream attainable again, starting with household costs. His pitch combines deregulation with promises of growth.

Donalds argues that permitting delays and government requirements drive up construction prices. He wants faster approvals for builders, betting that a larger housing supply will ease pressure on buyers and renters. He also promises a 20% reduction in homeowners insurance premiums through litigation reforms, home hardening and quicker rebuilding after hurricanes.

Property taxes are another concern. Donalds points to growing statewide collections as evidence that rising costs are squeezing residents despite Florida’s growth. His challenge is to show how state leadership can translate economic growth into relief for residents.

On healthcare, Donalds criticizes the Affordable Care Act and proposes requiring hospitals and clinics to publish cash prices for their 20 most common procedures. He also wants Florida’s Medicaid program to pursue lower prescription drug costs using federal pricing guidelines.

His agenda reaches beyond affordability. A proposed Launchpad initiative would expand employer-supported apprenticeships and skilled-trade training beyond college. Donalds also sees commercial spaceflight as a major source of future investment and high-paying jobs, especially on the Space Coast.

Donalds traces his leadership philosophy to his mother’s insistence on discipline and self-reliance, and to his years at Florida A&M University, where he encountered diverse communities. The political test is whether his sweeping proposals can deliver concrete, lasting, measurable savings while sustaining Florida’s growth.

“David Jolly still trails Donalds in fundraising but sees momentum” via A.G. Gancarski of Florida Politics — Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jolly is celebrating his strongest fundraising week yet, although Republican Donalds maintains a commanding financial advantage. Jolly’s campaign and political committee collected more than $2.7 million during the week ending Oct. 2, including roughly $254,000 in state matching funds. Hedge fund manager Henry Laufer contributed $1 million. Donalds raised more than $5.8 million during the same period and reported nearly $37 million on hand, compared with Jolly’s approximately $6 million. Despite the disparity, Jolly argues his growing small-dollar donor base demonstrates momentum. He estimates he will have $15 million for the campaign’s final three weeks, compared with Donalds’ projected $30 million to $35 million, while asserting the race remains competitive.
