Sunday June 15, 2014 The Mayor and the New Police Chief

Next Thursday June 19, 2014 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM there will be a public meet and greet with the St. Petersburg Police Chief Candidates at the Coliseum. I hope to see you there.

This is a process that has simply taken way too long.

Then mayoral candidate, Rick Kriseman, said he wanted a new Police Chief.  Chuck Harmon, in a class act, retired to clear the deck for the new Mayor to begin the process immediately after he was sworn in.  Consequently, here we are a full six months later without a permanent Police Chief.

It is time for a decision. We don't need another six weeks or months of various interest groups lobbying in front of the Mayor's million dollar dream team for this or that candidate.

We don't need to pare the current list down to 2 candidates and go through another round of whatever.  St. Pete needs a new Police Chief right now.

This is the Mayor's decision; he should have made it weeks, if not months ago. The Mayor already has a massive amount of information and feedback on all the candidates.

In the end, this is all about Rick Kriseman sitting down in his office ALONE, turning off the phone, shutting down the computer, and making what could be the most important decision of his first term.

This Friday would be a good day; a week from this Wednesday is just too late.
